What educators are saying

This was a great resource when I was a new teacher and didn’t know which songs and activities would be appealing to my older students. There are lots of gems in here.
Amazing collection of songs and games! I love using the Kodaly method, but it can be tricky to find songs that work for older beginners, that aren't too "babyish". Look no further!

Description

Need songs, activities, visuals, and more for your older beginners, or your upper elementary or middle school students who need to learn basic musical concepts? This comprehensive set includes:

*Songs and chants for older beginners: Aquaqua (Isreali singing game), Bate Bate (Mexican chant/ game), Big Fat Biscuit (African-American singing game), Boots of Shining Leather, Closet Key, Diddle Diddle Dumpling, Great Big House, Hotarukoi (Japanese round), I've been to Haarlem, Jump in, Kicikicikici (Japanese singing game), Little Swallow, Makue (Maori stick game), Old House, Pumpkin Apples, Raspberries (Ukrainian folk song), Red are strawberries, Rocky Mountain, Sakura (Japanese folk song), Sei Sei Sei (Japanese singing game), Si Si Si (folk song from Congo), Sorida (Greeting song from Zimbabwe), Stella Ella, Tideo, Tue Tue (Folk song from Ghana), Vamos a la Mar (Guatemalan folk song), Ye Toop Doram (Afghani singing game). Directions for games and dances are provided.

*Beat charts, for Great Big House, Closet Key, and a standard heart beat chart for any 16-beat song. These can be put on the SMART board or printed for each student to point to.

*Slideshows and visuals for these songs: Closet Key, Sakura, Old House, Raspberries (transitions into the rhythm for Bate Bate), and Sei Sei Sei. Note: The Sakura slideshow is very similar to the one included in my "Songs and Activities to Teach Half Note" set.

*Directions for the cup game

*2 sample lesson plans: One to practice mrd and ta/ti-ti, and the other to practice smrd and tika-tika. I included these so you had an idea of how older beginner lessons might flow; change and adapt as needed! Accompanying materials include poison pattern mini-sets for mrd and smrd.

*Song List for Older Beginners: Includes all the songs in the set, cross-referenced by concept, skills, and extensions. Also includes several listening and children's literature suggestions appropriate for older beginners.

*Older Beginner Worksheets: Includes tracing worksheets for mrd, smrd, and lsmrd, Writing worksheets for mrd, smrd, and lsmrd, Graphic organizers and answer keys for mi, sol, and la, Be a composer worksheets to practice ta/ti-ti, quarter rest, tika-tika, two, mrd, sol, and la, and music class reflection worksheets which allow students to reflect on what they learned in their previous music class

*Solfa Street Slideshows for mrd, smrd, and lsmrd (these are similar to the ones in my other melodic sets, but allow students to just learn about mrd without sol and la)

*Overview and Strategies: Offers definition of older beginner, as well as strategies and tips for working with those students

This set could also be helpful for working with upper elementary students who have learned basic concepts (as advanced concepts can be pulled from many of the songs) as well as students who learned mi-re-do before sol-mi.

"This resource is a HUGE blessing! I'll be starting at a brand new K-6 school next year and will have students coming from all over the place, so this is perfect to get everyone on the same page. THANK YOU!!!"

"Thank you so much! I feel so strong in what I have for teaching my younger students, but I'm constantly struggling for things for my older kids. This has already helped me out a ton in planning for upcoming units with my older kids!"

"This is fantastic. My older students are still struggling to catch up with a lot of concepts from their previous teacher and this is an excellent wealth of resources to engage them with. Still teaching the same kind of concepts, but without the "little kid" style of other songs. Thank you!"
