St. Patrick's Day Science Lab: Dyeing Carnations Green
This product contains 3 LABS to investigate the process of dyeing carnations green. Students will read an informational text about the process of florists dyeing flowers and the science behind it. Students will then able to complete three labs investigating: how long it takes for the dye to travel up the flower stem, whether cutting the stem allows you to predict locations of colors, and difference in the osmosis process due to water temperature.
About This Activity:
The purpose of this lab is to for students to investigate the process of plants "sucking up water" with food coloring. The informational article introduces the vocabulary of xylem and osmosis to explain the process.
The lab contains three separate labs.
1. The first lab investigate the question "How long will it take for Carnations to change color?" and guides students through a lab report focusing on making a hypothesis, recording data, and writing a conclusion. You will find that it takes approximately an hour for any color change to be seen and a day for significant color to be seen.
2. The second lab investigates, "Can you predict the locations of color change in a Carnation?" when the stem of the flower is split into two and soaked in two colors, and focuses on making a hypothesis, data collection, and analysis of results.
3. The third lab investigates, "Does the temperature of the water affect the rate of color change?" and focuses on making a hypothesis and analysis of results. My students found that cold water made a significant difference as compared to room-temp and warm.
