Student-made English/ASL Dictionary

Introduction

There are some great English/ASL dictionaries out there. Some are illustrated, some use English-only or ASL-only descriptions, and a precious few include all three: concept illustrations, English, and ASL.

But.

What about new content words Deaf students encounter in class? What about multiple-meaning words? How about English words that aren’t included in whatever dictionary a student has available?

This Student-made English/ASL Dictionary is one way to address these challenges.

We know that students learn (and remember!) best by doing, by multiple real-life experiences, and when personally invested. Looking up a word in a pre-made dictionary will only get a student part of the way toward that ever-crucial long-term memory bank that is needed for true reading comprehension.

This resource can be used as a tool to help them get new words all the way to long-term memory!

Included in the downloadable file are specific instructions on printing, how to create dictionary entries, and what to do with them once created. One dictionary entry page is filled out as an example, but students should create their own entries in order to reap the most benefit. For your convenience, an index of all the Bedrock Literacy Curriculum words for Years 1-5 is included.
