What educators are saying

So much fun! Students were very creative when designing their cakes. Fun way to review surface area and volume. Thank you!
My students loved this activity after we learned about volume and surface area. They got really creative with their designs.

Description

Students will love this real-world project that practices surface area and volume of prisms, cylinders, cones, and spheres by participating in a cake design challenge! I have successfully used this project with 7th grade, 8th grade, and 9th grade students.

In this project, students will design a cake using 3D objects (prisms, cylinders, cones, and spheres). By ordering custom cake pans for their creation, students will calculate the surface area (for icing) and volume (for the cake batter) of the completed cake design. A cake pan ordering form, design checklist, final design, and design brief will be completed. This is a ready to print project - students can use markers, colored pencils, and scissors to complete their final design.

Teacher instructions and a marking guide are included. Answer key is unavailable due to the individual nature of the designs. There is an example ordering form completed as well as two completed example designs to aid students. This project took about 3 class lessons (50 minute lessons) for my students to complete
