Description
This is a fun-filled activity that simulates the events that unfolded in the Berlin Conference of 1884-1885, sometimes referred to as the Scramble for Africa. It coincides with AP World History's Topic 6.2 - State Expansion from 1750-1900. However, it could be used for on-level courses too. There is minimal prep. Only a few things need to be printed and a couple of things need to be cut out.
"You are here in Berlin at the request of Otto von Bismarck to represent your designated nation. The goal of the meeting is to divide Africa up while avoiding the outbreak of an imperial war. Read your country goal card and make sure you keep this at the forefront of your actions. Generally speaking, all nations are seeking to increase their claims over African lands and, importantly, the resources the land contains."
In brief, the activity divides the class into 8 groups which represent 8 major players at the Berlin Conference. Students then negotiate agreements with the other countries as they try to claim as much of the land and resources of Africa as they can. But watch out! Each country has objectives of their own and may be looking to deceive.....
What is Included?
1. Teacher Instructions
Detailed instructions that give you the step-by-step instruction on how to successfully implement the activity. This covers what you can do before class to streamline the process and what needs to be done and when throughout the process on your end. These instructions are complete with important teaching moments that can be pointed out when debriefing from the simulation!
2. Student Instructions
Instructions for you to give to your students about how the activity works and what their goal is. These are both in the form of a Google Slides Presentation for posting in class and as a Google Doc for printing/posting if you prefer.
3. Goal Cards for Each Country
Specific goal cards for each of the 8 countries involved in the simulation. These give each grouping of students a specific goal to try to achieve on top of the general goal of getting as much land and resources as possible.
4. Customized Resource Map of Africa
A specifically made, customized map of Africa that was made precisely for this activity.
5. Debriefing Questions
A set of 7 debriefing questions once the activity is over to ensure that the students are learning important concepts and thinking critically about what they just completed with the important answers that should be emphasized.
6. Post Simulation Reading
A link and copy of an informational reading about the Berlin Conference to wrap up the activity
How can this resource be used?
- For best results, this activity should be used before students learn about the Berlin Conference and the Scramble for Africa. This will maximize student learning and retention because students see it as a game and try to win. That mentality will help them see and understand what went on at the conference and the ramifications of the decisions that were made.
What sets this apart from other similar resources?
- Students love learning through activities and simulations. It changes things up in a classroom and sticks out as something memorable throughout the year.
- They see this as a game and not learning!
