Description

Are you searching for a step-by-step PowerPoint that can be used to introduce themes in literature to your students in a way that will grab their attention? You've come to the right place! This 41-slide PowerPoint teaches students how to determine a theme within a literary work. Use this theme PowerPoint to create an engaging lesson. **You will need the book Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo for reference.**

PowerPoints filled with visuals are ideal for teaching new content to students because PowerPoints tend to be highly engaging and concepts can be easily broken down into understandable chunks of information. But let's face it... they are so time-consuming to create! Fortunately, now you have an option of using one that is already complete, kid-tested, and ready to go for you!

HERE'S THE SEQUENCE OF TOPICS COVERED IN THIS POWERPOINT:

Slides 1-3: Introduction & Definition of Theme

Slides 4-8: Explanation of the creme-filled cupcake analogy (The theme in a book is "hidden", just as the filling in a cupcake is usually hidden beneath the surface.)

Slides 9-10: Identifying the theme in "Little Red Riding Hood"

Slides 11-15: Identifying the theme in TWO practice passages

Slides 16-30: Identifying the themes in Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo

These slides teach the following elements of theme:

  1. A book's theme may be supported at various points throughout a book.
  2. A theme can be explicitly stated, but this is unusual.
  3. Usually, the theme must be inferred.
  4. Different readers might interpret the theme in different ways.
  5. Books can have more than one theme.

Slides 30-35: Read TWO short stories and identify the theme of each.

Slides 36-37: Conclusion

***A PowerPoint companion handout is also included in this file. As you advance through the PowerPoint, students can record their answers on the handout. The companion handout is available in both printable format or digital format.**
