Description

Teaching the Titanic? Your students will explore primary sources, non-fiction text, and leading theories about the Titanic disaster with this engaging crime scene investigation activity that encourages historical thinking!

A visually engaging case file is provided with comprehensive background readings on the Titanic and its construction, passengers, discovery, and impact. Leading theories about the cause of the disaster are provided. Student detectives will encounter non-fiction background information, primary source accounts and quotes, artifacts from the wreckage, and maps while taking detective notes on what they learn. They will then answer the reading comprehension response questions, complete a timeline activity, and draw and support their own hypothesis about the sinking of the Titanic! Students also learn about the role ocean liners had during the early 20th century, and the impact the Titanic has had. Three bonus writing extension activities included as well.

This investigation activity can be used as a printable packet activity, or as an engaging stations classroom activity with groups! Teacher and student notes are provided, along with an answer key for the background reading comprehension activity.

This activity is provided in both ready-to-print color and black and white versions.

This resource makes learning about the Titanic highly engaging and is a great supplement, introduction, or reinforcement activity to any lesson! Students will leave the lesson with an understanding of the Titanic, the most infamous maritime disaster of all time, and its impacts on history.
