Description
Want to try true crime podcasts but don't have an entire unit to devote to it? This mini-unit is perfect for you. This product includes graphic organizers for the first episodes of Serial and A Very Fatal Murder.
Update: I've included Google Slides versions of each graphic organizer to help with distance learning. The graphic organizers are the background of the slides and students create text boxes to input their answers.
Non-fiction podcast: Serial
Students focus on how people and events are described as well as the overall purpose of the podcast based on how it is presented. The graphic organizer helps students get the information they need for the second part of the lesson where they compare Serial to A Very Fatal Murder. A teacher guide lists the start and stop times for different segments and where information for each section of the organizer is found in the podcast episode.
Fiction (satire): A Very Fatal Murder
This podcast series by The Onion satirizes the true crime podcasts genre in general, but pairs best with Serial. Through this parody, students note the different ways the podcast mocks society in general as well as true crime podcasts. The final extension asks students to reassess their initial ideas about true crime as a form of entertainment. A teacher guide lists out start and stop times or you can just play it through depending on your group of students.
How you listen to the podcasts in the classroom is up to you. The worksheets have QR codes linking to the episodes through the web (not an app) so students can access the podcasts independently or in small groups or pairs. I’ve included a teacher guide for where to pause the podcast to discuss. This is for listening as a group or for guiding students to aparticular spot in the podcast where they can find the information they are looking for.
*****The Onion website may have offensive language! Content is always changing so please be aware if you have students access A Very Fatal Murder independently******
