Description
Building off of Unit 1, Unit 2 continues to follow the new AP curriculum guidelines as it builds upon the rhetorical situation. Students will understand exigence, purpose, audience, and context at a deeper level. In addition, there is a focus on Aristotle's rhetorical appeals. By the end of the unit, students will formulate a thesis, claims, and evidence. You will also find lessons and activities that explore different types of claims: fact, value, policy. Also, you will have lessons and activities for helping students identify different types of evidence (first and second hand) with clear examples and usages of each. This unit pushes students to explore the medium of a podcast. The activities that correspond to this PPT include an analysis of JFK's space race speech, MLK Jr.'s Letter From Birmingham Jail, a podcast on emotional appeal over logic, a PPT within the PPT giving background of MLK Jr.'s letter, and it provides writing assignments for students. I also include a bonus podcast - a 51 minute NPR segment on the appeals.
