Unit 4 of the Global History Curriculum (1750-Present) examines the causes and effects of World War I. After an analysis of the MANIA acronym (which identifies the five major causes for the war) and innovations such as trench warfare, students will assess the Russian Revolution and the rise of the Soviet Union under Vladimir Lenin.

◾ THE ASSASSINATION OF FRANZ FERDINAND
Students will examine the assassination of Franz Ferdinand as a cause of World War I, in conjunction with the M.A.N.I.A. acronym (militarism, alliances, nationalism, imperialism, and assassination).
◾ THE TREATY OF VERSAILLES
Students will analyze the effects of the Treaty of Versailles on Germany and scaffold for the rise of nationalism and militarism there twenty years later.
◾ THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION
After comparing and contrasting the economic situation in 1900s Russia to 1780s France, students will be able to identify the causes and effects of the Russian Revolution, which led to the demise of the Romanov family and the rise of a one-party state under Vladimir Lenin.
◾ THE FIVE YEAR PLANS
Students will analyze the effects of Stalin’s Five Year Plans on the Soviet people.
