Written Response Songs Using the RACE Strategy

Many students struggle with written responses to texts. Research shows that students are more likely to remember material put to music. This packet offers songs to enhance students' written responses.

This packets includes the following:

- Poster with overview of the RACER written response steps

- Two songs to help remind students of the RACER steps
- One written to the tune of the "I Don't Know But I've Been Told" military song
- One written to the tune of Frere Jacques


After modeling the steps of the RACER strategy, teach the students one or both of the songs as reminder of the steps.

(I had personally found that students had difficulty recalling these steps during assessments (TRC Written Response) After learning the song/s, students were successful in employing the steps and they enjoyed singing the songs.)
