Formal vs. Informal Language
I've always had a lot of difficulty with my students using slang and text or informal language in their ELA work. I devised this handy worksheet to help students understand the difference and when it is appropriate to use each type of language.
In the worksheet, there are a set of scenarios with an intended audience for each. The students have to decide if the language is formal or informal and then if it matches the intended audience. An extension activity for homework is also included.
Word Choice Writing Lesson: Overused Word List Activity and Poster (Grades 6-12)
Do your students use small, trivial, overused, trite, or otherwise just plain garbage words in formal writing? I've found that drawing their attention to word choice through fun little activities helps keep my students focused on powerful diction. With this free activity, you will lead your students in an independent reflection activity where they consider what words they deem overused. They will assign those words to their personal "Do Not Use" List. Then, you will reveal your own expectations.
