What educators are saying

This is great for both bell ringers and "I'm finished" work. Used in 6th grade to set the tone for the day as well as monitor writing standards as formative work. Love it. Easy to use and fun.
I absolutely loved this resource. I used it with my ninth graders as a short unit to work on developing their writing skills. The prompts were so effective in providing guidance. My students were challenged to improve their writing, and they had fun doing it!

Description

These fifteen mini-lessons with practice can help every secondary student writer improve.

When you use this print-and-go set, whether as a writer's notebook, a set of bellringers, writing station work, or a summer project, you'll be helping each of your writers advance across disciplines and across different types of assignments.

From the Reviews:

  • "This is AMAZEBALLS great! Not only are there clear examples comparing the 'before' and 'after' application of the lesson, but there are also writing prompts so students can get started right away. Therefore, you get a ton of quickwrite prompts as well as the super-clear instruction. I was thinking of making something like this myself so you have saved me time, which is so precious."

  • "Good solid resource that can be used in so many ways. I used a great deal of the resources for all of my grade levels. "

  • "I like this resource for the same reason I like many of this creator's materials. This series of lessons has entertaining examples, focuses on specific skills, and can be used basically as is. I always feel like Spark Creativity has a good sense of what kids know, need to learn, and how to get there."

Each lesson is presented in clear, down-to-earth language with vivid examples and writing practice for each.

Let me show you a few examples of the types of lessons inside:

  • Cut "to be" when you can: strong verbs create more effective and exciting sentences than using tons of “to be.”
  • Don't let your lines get monotonous: think of sentences like the colors in a painting. You don’t want to use just one. Different sentence structures do different things, and a variety helps keep your writing interesting.
  • Cut words you don't need: a huge part of editing is cutting out the fluff. Extra words, extra phrases, extra sentences, even extra paragraphs. Be watchful for extras and get rid of them.
  • Anyone can write like the encyclopedia, only you can write like you: Voice is what makes your writing different from anyone else’s. Special. Unique. It’s what sets you apart.

You'll find fifteen lessons presented with a beautiful cover page if you want to bind this as a booklet, along with fifteen writing practice prompts, each complete with an early finisher follow-up, and materials for a review display you can use to help remind students of the lessons that have come before as you move forward.

CHECK OUT THE VIDEO PREVIEW TO SEE EVERY LESSON AND PROMPT.

When you open the zip file, expect to see four options - one with full photography on each mini-lesson page, another with an easier-to-print black and white pencil sketch version of the photos, an editable template for you to add your own writing lessons if you wish, and a Powerpoint with instructions for Google Drive access.
