This no-prep lesson covers the governments of both Athens and Sparta of Ancient Greece. The EDITABLE slide presentation walks you through each part of the lesson as students take notes and try out each type of government. It includes both whole class and group activities. Students will get an overview of democracy and oligarchy and have a chance to analyze their efficacy.

Here's how the lesson plays out:
1. Warm-up: Students demonstrate their knowledge of the U.S. government
2. Brief intro discussing the role of governments in general.
3. A presentation and video on democracy in Athens.
4. Students practice direct democracy using an age-relevant question. In groups they discuss and identify both the advantages and disadvantages
5. After a share-out they all vote.
6. A presentation covering the government of Sparta.
7. A whole class simulation of the "shout out" method of voting for 3 volunteers.
8. 2 check for understanding question concludes the lesson.
