Description

**SIMULATE DEMOCRACY IN ACTION**

The Greeks eventually defeated the Persians and the threat from the east was gone. Thus began one of the greatest periods in Athenian history, the Age of Pericles. Pericles’ first stated goal was to strengthen Athenian democracy. While the idea of democratic rule was probably not a brand new concept in the 5th century B.C.E., there is no evidence that it was successfully used to govern large groups of people prior to Ancient Athens (which had a population of approximately 300,000+). Athenian democracy was not pure, and not perfect, but it was a deviation from conventional monarchical or oligarchic governance. Another thing about Athenian democracy: it was not easy. This simulation is designed to reinforce that idea.
