What educators are saying

This is a great resource for my upper level culinary classes. And it saves me the work of having to recreate the same exact thing for random food nutrition labels. It fits perfectly with the lesson plans I already have for the Nutrition unit in the upper level class.

    Description

    Bundle Contents:

    A) Google Slides to Guide Lesson (See item A Below)

    B) Guided Notes that match slides (See item B Below)

    C) Nutrition Facts Hyperdoc for Individualized Self-Guided Application (See item C Below)

    D) Nutrition Facts Analysis sheet for a simple quick self-application (See item D below)

    Descriptions:

    A) This Powerpoint guides teachers and students through the eight parts of a Nutrition Facts Label. It is a digital resource in a Google Slides format that can be downloaded to Powerpoint if you so choose. This comprehensive label reading lesson includes information on why each item is included and the importance of this information for making knowledgeable health decisions is discussed. There are embedded interactive activity suggestions, plenty of descriptive photos depicting concepts, and interactive GIFs in a well-designed and comprehensive presentation. Of course, you can add and edit the information as needed to suit your needs since it is Google Slides format. After the teacher-centered portion of the lesson, a link to a review game is included as a suggestion for a follow-up activity.

    The topics discussed include:

1)Why the Nutrition Facts Label is Important & Specific Populations it Can Assist in Making Informed Food Choices

    2) Calories & Serving Size

    3) Nutrients to Limit

    4) Nutrients to Increase

    5) Daily Value

    6) Footnote

    7) Ingredients

    8) Allergy Warnings

    B) The included guided notes sheet helps keep students engaged during a discussion of the eight parts of a Nutrition Facts Label. It can be used in conjunction with the above referenced Google Slidesavailable in my store or as an activity/assessment on its own. The label included is for a popular snack food, Flamin' Hot Cheetos, and requires students to dissect the label and locate each item to identify the nutrients it contains. I use it to help students follow along and "take notes" as I go through the Powerpoint. I'd recommend trying it this way too! This product includes of a PDF and Word Version so you can edit it to suit your needs. A key is also included.

    C) This hyperdoc is meant to help students become familiar with reading a nutrition facts label, the upcoming changes to the label, and how to create their own Nutrition facts label. Students will watch an introductory video about the food label (link included to YouTube video), and will reflect on the importance of the label. Then, they will explore an infographic about the upcoming changes to the Nutrition Facts label, and summarize some of the highlights of these changes. Next, students will explore your school's lunch menu. They will choose a menu item and use allrecipes.com to find a recipe for this dish. They will then input this information into recipal.com to generate a custom nutrition facts label for this item. They will upload this label to a class padlet (you create your own), and classmates will comment guessing what the item is from the menu and justifying their response. Next, students will complete a video reflection on Thinglink (you create) including their "glow & grow"- areas of learning and areas they feel they need to improve regarding their own nutrition facts needs. This hyperdoc is in a Word Document format for easier editing and sharing, but can easily be uploaded to GoogleDocs for use with students. You will need to insert your own links to your own Padlet, ThingLink, and Lunch Menus.

    D) This lesson can be followed up with a nutrition facts label reading activity, the included label analysis sheet. You will need real food products or sample labels for this activity so students have a label to interpret. This worksheet will help students learn the parts of the FDA Nutrition Facts Food Label as they identify the amounts of particular nutrient contained within a given label. Create stations and have students rotate, have students bring in a label from home or the cafeteria, or have them prepared in advance! Students will identify the type and amount (Including units) of various essential nutrients including protein, fats, vitamins, and sugars. Then, students will complete analysis questions about the ingredient list, allergy warnings, and an overall food evaluation based on the label. The questions have been structured so that students are required to support their claims with evidence, bringing in their ELA skills.
