Unit 1 Overview: Purposeful Citizenship

  • In this unit, students will explore the concepts of Purposeful Citizenship. Students will learn about the formation of Canadian democracy and those that contributed to its development, prominent ideologies and systems of government. In addition, they will discuss different points of view on ideologies and structures of government.

Unit 2 Overview: Informed Citizenship

  • In this unit, students will explore how Canada’s government actually functions. Students will learn how Canadian federalism is structured, how parliament functions, how elections are run and how the judicial system works. In addition, students will learn about and evaluate the beliefs of various political parties.

Unit 3 Overview: Active Citizenship

  • In this unit, students will explore how to be an active citizen within their own communities and beyond. Students will learn about the importance of primary and secondary sources and how to discuss/evaluate different points of view on prominent local, provincial, national and international issues. In addition, students will complete a “Knowledge to Active” project which encourages them to be active citizens.
  • "Digital Literacy" has also been added to the unit.
  • In addition, students analyze articles, political cartoons, and media clips to form a "Current Events Portfolio."
