Description

This is a collection of posters that help your students better navigate the culinary adventures of the kitchen.

There are posters that cover kitchen vocabulary, reasons to wash your hands, general kitchen safety, food safety, full scale equivalency and guide posters for cups, teaspoons, and liquid cup measurements ("full scale" meaning that you can hold a Tablespoon up to the picture on the poster and match it to the correct size). There are also posters on stove top safety, fire and knife safety, and how to use a knife correctly.

All of the posters are colorful and easy to understand with bright pictures and easy language.

They are created to be laminated and posted in the appropriate places in the life skills kitchen and/or taken home to be used in their home kitchen. This packet is meant to be a starter kit for cooking in the kitchen. With this basic knowledge at hand, students are better able to figure out recipes and understand otherwise vague terminology and measurement concepts. And, of course, it is a great way to teach concrete mathematical skills that have an immediate and useful impact on a students life.

Along with these posters, you will find matching assessments that help to further concrete the information from the posters into the students brain. These assessments should be done in a way that is fun and positively reinforced to help keep the students interest in cooking at the forefront of their learning.

Apart from the typical usage of hanging the posters and discussing them with the students, there are endless ways to utilize the included assessment sheets. Below are just a few ideas:

  • Send kids on a scavenger or gallery walk to find the answers. They can be in teams, pairs, or they can do it as individuals. To get the correct answers, all they have to do is find the poster with the correct information. This is something that the teacher can easily oversee and talk about as students search for their answers.
  • Punch holes in the entire packet, place them in a three brad folder, and have the students take them home to complete with their parents. (Hopefully this will get them involved with cooking on the home front).
  • Have the students sit in small groups and discuss each poster as they write in or cut-n-paste the needed information.

Included in this packet:

  • Two vocabulary sheets that cover thirty (30) words and terms that are commonly found in the kitchen and cookbooks.
  • Five (5) vocabulary cut-n-paste/matching reinforcement worksheets.
  • A graphic poster on the reasons to wash your hands, complete with gross germ infested hands, and the common places germs are transmitted from items to a persons hands.
  • A BEE SAFE kitchen safety poster with matching assessment sheet.
  • A food safety poster with matching assessment sheet.
  • A measuring cup guide poster (scaled to match life sized measuring cups) with matching assessment sheet.
  • A teaspoon/Tablespoon guide poster (scaled to match life sized measuring spoons) with matching assessment sheet.
  • Four equivalency posters that depict how many of one thing goes into another. Ex: Two half cups make one cup, two 1/4 teaspoons make one 1/2 teaspoon, etc.....
  • The equivalency posters have an accompanying assessment sheet that focuses primarily on basic fraction skills. Gotta love incorporating STEM skills!
  • There is also a poster on stove top safety. This also has a matching assessment sheet.
  • There is a poster for the fire extinguisher location.
  • There is also a poster on what to do in case of a fire in the kitchen, and how to properly use a fire extinguisher. This has an accompanying assessment sheet as well.
  • There is a poster on knife skills. How to use and hold a knife properly in the kitchen. This also has an accompanying assessment sheet.
  • And last but not least, there is a poster on basic first aid. And as you guessed, it also has an accompanying assessment sheet.

This is a really great poster set, and one that hangs throughout my classrooms galley kitchen. I make it a point to review these posters throughout our class cooking time by randomly calling on a student and having them read a poster to me. It has turned into a game with the students, where they try to recall as much as they can before looking at the poster (I just don't tell them that that was my plan all along!).

I am positive you will enjoy these posters as much as I have.

Thank you very much for reading.
