What educators are saying

My students were so engaged with this unit! They loved creating their own superhero and making a comic. We laminated them and displayed them in our school library!
I have a novel study completed in my class each year that includes a character making graphic novels. This increases and enriches the follow activity my students complete too plan and create a mini-comic book. Thank you very much.

Description

Telling students they're going to do "creative writing" can result in panic. Not with this fun lesson that has great graphics, fabulous graphic organizers, and an engaging partner activity.

This lesson is made up of three activities that culminate in the students' creating a comic book. Students will work together to learn a variety of character traits to use to create a comic book hero. Then they will imagine how this champion could save the world. Finally, students will use illustrations and speech bubbles to create a comic book of an adventure starring their superhero.

One thing I think you'll like is that I sought out superhero clipart with superheroes of color so all students feel connected and included.

Let's find out more about the activities!

★ ACTIVITY 1: CREATE A SUPERHERO PARTNER ACTIVITY

In this activity, students will work in partners to lean more about character traits. They'll take a turn selecting a card and reading the character trait listed on the card. Then they will think of a synonym that means the same as the word listed on the card. If they do not know what the word means or cannot think of a word that is a synonym, they should use a dictionary to look it up. Then they will create a superhero and decide on character traits to describe him or her. Look at all the standards!!!
ACTIVITY 2: SAVING THE WORLD INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY

In this activity, students will think of big world problems. Students will write write a problem in each of the boxes on a graphic organizer. Then they will write one character trait for each problem and describe how the superhero can solve that problem being motivated by that trait. Then students will select problems and solutions to use in their adventure. They'll plan a sequence of events and how the problems and solutions lead to one another. Then they will plan out the adventure's beginning, middle, and end.

ACTIVITY 3: WRITING A COMIC BOOK INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY

Using graphic organizers, students will create a comic book. Students will carefully illustrate the story in sequence order. Then students will add dialogue in the form of speech bubbles to bring the story to life.
