Description

Students examine the emergence of Korea as a culture and country throughout history in this interactive lesson. How was Korea impacted by its geography? How has China historically shaped Korea's identity? What elements and achievements have created a distinctly "Korean" identity?

Key lesson points include:

  • Significance of geographic features
  • Three Kingdoms Period, Shilla Dynasty, Koryo Dynasty, and Chosun Dynasty
  • Impact of China, Confucianism and Buddhism
  • Art, Literacy, and King Sejong's Hangul alphabet
  • Changing social class and role of women
  • Interaction with Japan and Mongols
  • Optional lesson supplement includes video clip and guided notes on history of modern Korea's north/south division

Students read passages, identify key vocabulary words, examine maps, analyze images, and watch a three minute video clip. They complete guided notes, answer summative and analytical writing questions, discuss ideas with a partner, and have a blast using hangul (Korean alphabet) to write their names.

A detailed four page teacher guide and answer key guides you easily through the lesson and provides supplemental lecture and discussion materials. See the Preview for excerpts.
