Digital Citizenship - Understanding Copyright

Teaching upper elementary and lower middle school students the “ins and outs” of Copyright can be a daunting task! Understanding Copyright will do the work for you by presenting a comprehensive look at:

• What Copyright is along with a brief history,
• Examples of what works can and cannot be copyrighted,
• Differences between Plagiarism and Copyright Infringement, and
• What Public Domain, Creative Commons and Fair Use are.

Your students will:

• Take a ten question Pre-Test to assess their current knowledge,
• Watch a video and read information from bright, student friendly slides about what can be copyrighted and how long it lasts.
• Watch a video about Citations for Beginners
• Complete a “drag and drop” sorting activity on what they can use with and without permission,
• Learn about Plagiarism and Copyright Infringement and their similarities and differences,
• Complete a "drag and drop" sorting activity to show their understanding of Plagiarism and Copyright Infringement
• Learn about Public Domain, Creative Commons Copyright, and Fair Use and how they can use materials that fall into those categories,
• Take a Post Test to determine the growth in knowledge
• Create a Copyright Poster to display at school--links to five Public Domain and Creative Commons clip art sites are included,
• Complete and print a "Copyright Expert" certificate to take home (video printing instructions included!)

• 16 page PDF with instructions and link to Google Slides file
• Instructions include how to share the file as well as the Pre-Test and Post Test so you can collect the data about how your students have grown in their knowledge of Copyright issues (makes a great artifact for teacher evaluation)
