Teachers’ jobs are unique because even when we are out, we still have to work. We work to get the plans ready, work the day we return, and work to get everything checked from the day we were out. It is almost like double work to be out! I don’t know about you, but the day I get return to my classes, I feel a bit disheveled trying to get back into the groove. Thus, the first 2 options in this packet have follow-up activities for the day you return so that you have some time to catch your breath. If you just need an option that will take a class period so that you can pick up where you previously left off in your regular lessons, then option 3 might be the right one for you. Option 1 and 3 include a little history as well for cross-curricular learning.

These options will keep students thinking and engaged while you are away. Of course, you don’t have to wait! These lessons will work for any time you need a well-deserved break or want to do something different.

Select which plans you want to use out of the packet ahead of time, make copies, and put them on your desk in a folder labeled “Emergency Sub Plan.” Go ahead and include your class roll, bell schedule, seating charts, class procedures, special duties, or anything else necessary. Then, on those days when crazy happens, you are prepared and don’t have to stress out making lesson plans.

Option 1: Students read and analyze a poem that made a change. Then, they write their own poem of change for a school rule, national law, or world-wide issue. A brainstorming sheet is included as scaffolding. Answer key for the poem analysis questions is also included.

Option 2: Students write a fable using the characters that match their names and birthdays. A brainstorming sheet is included as scaffolding.

Option 3: Students make a Priority Totem Pole or a Character Totem Pole. Examples are included.

All of these options have explicit instructions, so all you have to do is print them for your students. Since there are several options, these plans could take anywhere from one class period to several days of English class.
