What educators are saying
I used these stem activities during my "Beach Day" during our 10 day countdown to summer. It was very low prep and the students had a blast.
It is hard to go wrong with STEAM activities, but I must admit, this was outstanding. I used it during the last week of school when fun, beach balls, and summer break was a magic combination for my 2nd graders.
Description
Beach Ball STEM Day is a fun end of the year activity. Students will rotate around five different beach ball themed centers for hands-on critical thinking, measurement, and engineering projects. Use a different center each day during the last week of school, or do all of the centers in one engaging beach ball themed day!
Stations and Materials:
Beach Ball Measurement --measure length, circumference, height, and mass
Materials: student balance, ruler, measuring tape
Beach Ball Torch -- students will create a device that carries the beach ball like a torch
Materials: aluminum foil
Beach Ball Tower -- students will create an index card tower that supports a beach ball
Materials: index cards, tape
Beach Ball Suitcase -- students will create a suitcase that completely encloses the beach ball and can be carried with a handle
Materials: newspaper, tape
Beach Ball Picker Upper -- students will construct a device that picks up a beach ball
Materials: rubber bands and various pool or beach toys (pool noodle, plastic shovels, etc...)
**You will also need a stop watch and at least 6 beach balls.
As an added bonus, buy everyone a beach ball as an end of the year gift, and have them spend the last part of the day signing each other’s beach balls as a fun send off!
Included in this Packet:
-Detailed teacher notes and picture examples (download the preview for more specific details!)
-A station overview that includes stations, materials, and extension ideas.
-Station Direction signs (2 versions, one with and one without time constraints in case you want to use different time frames than the ones suggested.)
-Beach Ball Station passport for students to use for recording at each station.
-Beach Balls to glue on when students complete each challenge.
-Beach Ball Family Challenges to send home.
