Description

Fannie Lou Hamer Web Quest Activity | Diverse Voices Project | 3 Part Web Quest

This Fannie Lou Hamer activity is part of an exciting new project designed to increase diverse voices in Social Studies classrooms. This Fannie Lou Hamer activity is a 3-part web quest. In Part 1 (READ), students engage with Hamer's legacy in American History and the Civil Rights Movement. In Part 1, students learn about Fannie Lou Hamer's effort to register Black Americans to vote in the 1960s, her peaceful protest that led to her arrest and physical abuse while unlawfully imprisoned, her efforts to reform society as a candidate for the Mississippi House of Representatives, creation of the National Women's Political Caucus, and her work in creating the Freedom Farm Collective that established hundreds of low-income housing options for Americans.

Part 2 (WATCH) is a short video that students watch to learn more about Fannie Lou Hamer's work to reform American society by expanding voting privileges. Students learn about how society discouraged Black Americans from voting, and how Hamer worked tirelessly to create a more equitable society.

In Part 3 (INTERPRET), students engage in a primary source analysis related to Fannie Lou Hamer's influence in the Civil Rights Movement.
