What educators are saying

My students loved this activity. I gave them the freedom to color each square however they chose. I then displayed them on the huge windows in my classroom for the entire length of the unit. It really decorated the room nicely!
My students loved collaborating on this activity. I used it as at the tail end of my antebellum unit to reinforce aspects of Douglass while we completed the poster. Still hanging in my room!

Resource Details

Poster Option #1: Frederick Douglass Collaboration Poster: Coloring

** GREAT FOR ANY AGE ** This lesson is very easy. Each student is given one section of a large mosaic poster to color according to the instructions on each sheet. Once all sheets are colored and cut out, they are then assembled to reveal a large mosaic/poster/mural of Frederick Douglass. You will need crayons, colored pencils, or markers in green, blue, pink, orange, and red.

Poster Details:

  • There are 30 pieces.
  • Each piece fits on a regular 8.5" x 11" piece of paper.
  • The final poster is approx. 35" x 42" depending on your printer settings.
  • You will need markers, crayons, or colored pencils in green, blue, pink, orange, and red.

Poster Option #2: Frederick Douglass Collaboration Poster: Drawing

** Ideal for middle school, high school students, and art students** This lesson is not hard but is more challenging than the coloring version in poster #1. In this lesson, each student will draw their own grid piece using a small version of their assigned gridcell as a reference. Once the pieces are drawn and cut out, the classroom poster can be assembled. This lesson engenders a lot of cooperation among students to get all of the drawings within the individual gridcells to line up well and produce a nice looking final poster of Frederick Douglass. This is all about working together!

BONUS Activities:

Group collaboration posters are a lot of fun and leave a lasting impression. However, students don’t get to walk away with anything tangible to show their families. I have created a variety of handouts that individual students can work on when they are finished with their poster piece. This is also very useful for early finishers.

The handouts are for a variety of levels, so you can find one that fits your grade level. Included are:

  • Unscramble the portrait drawing.
  • Unscramble the portrait cut and paste (with two grid variations).
  • Frederick Douglass coloring page.
