Holy Week Readers' Theater Skit Script
What educators are saying
Description
This Holy Week readers’ theater script is an informative and worshipful experience for kids and adults. This serious skit features readings of fourteen eyewitness accounts of the events of Holy Week based on what is found in the four gospels. Starting with the events of Palm Sunday, characters like a Jewish traveler, a disciple, Simon the Leper, Judas, James, Peter, Caiaphas, Pilate, a Roman soldier, Simon of Cyrene, John, Joseph of Arimathea, and Mary Magdalene tell listeners what they saw, heard, and felt as they encountered Jesus through the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, his betrayal by Judas, Passover night, arrest, trial, crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection. Interspersed with the readings are verses from the song “Were You There When They Crucified My Lord” for the audience to sing.
This readers’ theater was originally written for a K-8 chapel service in a Christian school. Adults read the accounts. With practice and guidance, students could also effectively read the accounts. (It is recommended that students 4th grade and up be the readers.) The script is also appropriate for use in a high school chapel setting or a church worship service. The duration of the script, along with the singing, is 30-40 minutes.
