    Description

Supporting Indigenous Resources for Inclusive Learning for Elementary and Middle School Students

This response unit supports in class learning as well as DISTANCE LEARNING for

I AM NOT A NUMBER with Google Classroom and Microsoft TEAMS.

It works well with EPIC! an amazing online book website carrying this title, I AM NOT A NUMBER, as well as many other contemporary Indigenous titles.

This bundle is a combination of two individual novel units, As The Rivers Flow, written by Larry Loyie, with Constance Brissenden and illustrated by Heather D. Holmlund and I AM NOT A NUMBER, written by Jenny Kay Dupuis and Kathy Kacer, and illustrated by Gillian Newland. The stories compliment each other as they expose the stark contrast of the lives of Indigenous children BEFORE entering residential school and their time DURING residential school.

As Long as the Rivers Flow, beautifully describes the connections the Indigenous people have with family, community and the land, while I AM NOT A NUMBER, depicts how sterile, anonymous and abusive the children’s lives became once entering the residential schools.

These novel study units were created to support a single novel read-aloud, should a class set be unavailable. The two stories together are not long; with a teaching duration of about three weeks and are appropriate for grades 4-8, integrating Language Arts and Social Studies learning outcomes.

The units include BC Curriculum Big Ideas for grade 4-9 in Language Arts and Social Studies relevant to this unit are identified. Outside of BC, similar curricular comparisons can be made. Answer keys and assessment rubrics are included.

Comprehension strategies used in this unit are: connection, prediction, questioning, visualization, summarizing and real life extensions.

To obtain a copy of this book and others like it, I recommend checking out Strong Nations, an online bookstore supplying indigenous and Native American books. Not only do they have an extensive selection, they provide themed book bundles for all age ranges.
