Description

Just like baseball players prepare for games during spring training, you can build off this theme during your class test-prep season! Share your own review questions while playing these baseball-themed games to prepare students for state testing. This resource is ideal for upper-elementary teachers who want to spice up daily review sessions with a little extra fun! I use these four games to review before math and ELA tests all year long!

⚠️ Use these review games with ANY content. Find test-prep questions online or copy review worksheets from your curriculum set. These games are designed to add fun “on top of” your regular testing review problems. Math and ELA questions are not included in this resource - only the materials for organizing the games.

✏️ 4 Low-Prep Classroom Game Ideas

  • Mystery Cards - a bluffing game where teams can earn or lose points after answering questions.
    • This game can be played with any review worksheet or problem set. You will need to print the included baseball diamond and player cards. Cut apart the baseball cards and place them inside small envelopes. Tape the envelopes (or use magnets) to your classroom whiteboard.
  • Grounders - a “Minute to Win It” style game where teams roll a ping-pong ball into plastic cups after answering questions.
    • This game can be played with any review worksheet or problem set. You will also need 5 plastic cups, 5 ping-pong balls, and a table. (If you don't have a long table in your classroom, you can play a variation of this game by rolling the ping-pong balls on the floor.
  • Catching Practice - Have you ever played the party game where guests pass gifts to the right and left each time they hear those words in a story? I tried that out with my students and it was a blast!
    • This game can be played with any set of task cards. If you don't have task cards, you can take a review worksheet and cut the problems apart. The idea is that each student will have one question to answer at a time before passing it on to the next person.
  • Dugout - an elimination game where students answer questions and send someone from the other team back to their dugout (their desk).
    • This game can be played with any review worksheet or multiple-choice questions. Before playing, cut apart the number cards included in the download. You will need two complete sets of number cards.

✋ Do these games work best with the whole class or in small groups?

  • I play these games with my whole class. They work well with multiple students and make for a fun way to review content. My students look forward to "Spring Training" every year because they learn that test prep and review can be fun!

✋ What will I need in addition to this resource?

  • Prepare the games ahead of time. Some games require you to cut pieces or gather classroom materials. Furthermore, since this kit only includes the game ideas and corresponding elements, you will need to find your own review questions. My state has practice tests online. I often pull up these questions and use them during our games.
