The activities at each station in this lab are detailed below.

Tectonic Plate Boundaries Lab Stations Activity Learning Objectives

1. Compare and contrast convergent, divergent and transform plate boundaries.

2. Explain how the composition of tectonic plates influences the motion of the plates at a plate boundary.

3. Summarize how Earth’s surface changes as a result of tectonic plate motion.

4. Discuss the time and scale at which tectonic plate motion changes Earth’s surface.

Science Skills Station

Students will model what occurs at different types of plate boundaries, including a transform plate boundary, adivergent plate boundary and a convergent plate boundary between two continental plates and a continental and oceanic plate.

Narrative Station

Students will watch a video that introduces plate tectonics and the different types of tectonic plate boundaries. Students will read about different tectonic plate boundaries and changes to Earth’s surface that occur at those boundaries.

Assessment Station

At this station, students will answer questions about key terms and ideas relating to tectonic plate boundaries. Students must employ lower, mid and higher order thinking skills to answer these questions.

Problem-Solving Station

Students will create a model that summarizes the geoscience processes that shape Mount Everest. Students will watch a video about the forces and factors that act on Mount Everest. Then they will create a model that illustrates the processes that cause Mount Everest to be the highest point on Earth’s surface.

Synthesis Station

Students will compose a CER (claim-evidence-reasoning) report to summarize the lab. Students are provided the claim statement and must support the claim with observations, data and other information gathered in the lab. Students will explain how the evidence supports the claim using scientific reasoning.

Synthesis Project

Students will have a choice of 11 projects. Refer to the SNAPs Lab Stations Best Practices and Setup Guide for directions and suggestions on how to conduct the project.

Graham Crackers (3 rectangles per group)

Whipped Cream (1-2 cups per group)

Large paper plates (1 per group)

Piece of styrofoam (thicker but similar in size to a graham cracker)

NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS

This laboratory satisfies NGSS MS-ESS2-2. It combines the three dimensions of science learning - science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas and crosscutting concepts - to meet the standard. This lab also makes interdisciplinary connections to STEM, Math CCSS and ELA CCSS to build the appropriate skills.

Construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience processes have changed Earth’s surface at varying time and spatial scales. Emphasis is on how processes change Earth’s surface at time and spatial scales that can be large (such as slow plate motions or the uplift of large mountain ranges) or small (such as rapid landslides or microscopic geochemical reactions), and how many geoscience processes (such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and meteor impacts) usually behave gradually but are punctuated by catastrophic events. Examples of geoscience processes include surface weathering and deposition by the movements of water, ice, and wind. Emphasis is on geoscience processes that shape local geographic features, where appropriate.
