What educators are saying

Engaging and interactive! The students loved every moment of it and were fully immersed in the learning experience. The materials provided were high quality. It was evident that a lot of thought and effort went into designing this activity.
My students loved using this PBL to review the different properties of multiplication! It was so engaging and such a hit with my students.

Description

This 5-day project-based math resource applies math concepts in a real-world scenario to teach students about the properties of multiplication, including the associative property, distributive property, and commutative property. In this 5-day unit, students will learn about and apply the properties of multiplication as they create and design cookies for a class cookie decorating contest. This multiplication math project is engaging and authentic. Plus, it's available as both a digital and print resource.

This project-based math resource covers concepts of rounding and is aligned with the following 3rd Grade Math Common Core State Standards:

  • Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division.
  • CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.B.5
    Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply and divide.2 Examples: If 6 × 4 = 24 is known, then 4 × 6 = 24 is also known. (Commutative property of multiplication.) 3 × 5 × 2 can be found by 3 × 5 = 15, then 15 × 2 = 30, or by 5 × 2 = 10, then 3 × 10 = 30. (Associative property of multiplication.) Knowing that 8 × 5 = 40 and 8 × 2 = 16, one can find 8 × 7 as 8 × (5 + 2) = (8 × 5) + (8 × 2) = 40 + 16 = 56. (Distributive property.)

This resource is available in both Printable & Digital Google Slides versions.

What's included in this resource:

•Background Knowledge: Using a KWL, students will build background knowledge around cookie decorating contests and learn about the judging criteria.

•Multiplication Review: Students will review the basics of multiplications and arrays.

•Associative Property: Students will learn about the associative property and practice solving equations using the associative property. The students will then create a cookie for the decorating contest and apply the associative property in their design.

•Distributive Property: Students will learn about the distributive property and practice solving equations using the distributive property. The students will then create a cookie for the decorating contest and apply the distributive property in their design.

•Commutative Property: Students will learn about the commutative property and practice solving equations using the commutative property. The students will then create a cookie for the decorating contest and apply the commutative property in their design.

•Wrap Up: Students will plan and review their final design for the class cookie decorating contest.

•Optional Extension: Students can create a model of their cookie using real cookies and decorating supplies to enter into a real class cookie decorating contest.
