Percent Applications, Percent Change, and Simple Interest Mathketball SOL 8.4
- Flipchart File
Description
SOL 8.4: The student will solve practical problems involving consumer applications.
The mathketball activity includes word problems that involve the use of proportional reasoning. Students are asked to find the sales tax, mark-up, tip, and discount of real world situations. Students are asked to compute the percent of change given a real world problem. Students are asked to determine the amount of interest a loan or bank account can earn.
A fun interactive math game that gets students involved and excited in class. There are many different ways to play and use this activity. I personally create teams and have students solve each problem on small personal white boards for quick assessment. After all students have answered the question I check their work for understanding. Teams that have all students with a correct answer earn a point for their team and then each team gets a chance to have one member of the group come up and shoot a free throw at a small Nerf Basketball Hoop. I reward teams that make the basket with another point. At the end of class I reward the winning team. You can also reward teams for behavior as well, such as being on task and quietly working.
