Persuasive Research Project (Making a Claim) Fully CCS Aligned

Forming an opinion based on text materials is a skill students must learn by the end of 4th grade. This research project asks that students take the driver’s seat to find articles, form an opinion, and then to present their findings in an essay, as well as in a panel discussion with other students.

This product will help your students understand exactly what they will be expected to do in the coming weeks. This project is assessing multiple common core standards, such as researching and finding sources, strategic reading abilities, as well as using the information found to form an opinion and make a claim.

Students are being asked to first choose a topic out of the three choices given. Students will then find more articles related to the topic, summarize, make their own claim on the topic, and finally write an essay and present to their classmates. All articles are included in this packet, as well.

I am using this with my students right now and it requires a lot of guidance and mini lessons. I am going to give this project to my kiddos again at the end of the year and am asking each student to complete this alone as a final, year-end assessment.
