What educators are saying
Description
Make a boring topic more engaging with this Protein Synthesis Cookie Lab! Your students will model DNA replication, transcription and translation in an attempt to create a protein (aka: decorated sugar cookie).
Your students will begin the activity with a cookie recipe (gene) that they will transcribe into RNA. From there, they will translate the mRNA into codons that code for ingredients that will be used to decorate their cookie. They must be careful, though! A wrong step will cause a mutation that will affect the appearance of their decorated cookie!
This activity includes:
✅ 3 different cookie recipes (for variation)
✅ step-by-step teacher guide (with pictures for easy implementation)
✅4 page student lab document
✅cookie codon chart
✅answer key
This entire resource is editable so that you can customize to fit your classroom needs. This activity incredibly flexible and easy to set up and implement. Plus, your students will love showing off their transcription and translation skills!
*Please note: I use this activity during the holiday season; however, this lab can be used ANYTIME of the year.
