Description

Engage your students in persuasive and/or opinion writing this Earth Day with this recycling writing project. Students are introduced to a problem in the community - throwing out electronics, instead of recycling them. Based on this information, students are asked to write a letter to their local newspaper describing the problem and persuading others to begin recycling instead. This opinion and persuasive writing activity will draw your students in, ask them to defend a side, and write in a way to persuade others. Students will begin by reading the provided article and infographics to learn about the problem. Then, using the notes page and graphic organizer, they will be guided through the process of planning and writing their letter. A great way to connect using text evidence in a writing activity! This guided writing activity is a great way to practice opinion and persuasive writing techniques, while also incorporating reading comprehension skills.

Recycling E-Waste Opinion Writing Project includes:

  • Detailed Student Instructions
  • 1 Article on E-Waste
  • 2 Infographics on E-Waste
  • Guided note taking sheet
  • Persuasive / Opinion Writing Graphic Organizer
  • A List of Transitional Words
  • Rough Draft Lined Paper
  • Buddy Editing Rubric
  • Lined Paper for Final Draft
  • Grading Rubric

Please note, I have this project listed as taking a week. This would be the approximate length if you used this as a complete project using the stages of writing.

Great resource! I love that it is about E-waste. The kids hear about recycling and plastic all the time. This relates to kids so much and I bet they haven't really thought about what they should do if they need to get rid of an electronic. Thank you!

⭐ Great resource to pair with my opinion writing unit. -- thank you! :)

⭐ Very useful resource for my unit on the global environment. Students ultimately used the information as they prepared infographics in e-waste.
