What educators are saying

Great resource! My students were engaged and worked cooperatively. I really appreciated the discussion students had while using this resource.
I use this with advanced 6th grade students (IQs of 140+). I love the stations and how interactive it is. Kids learn from each other while they're working, and they are very engaged!

Description

In this Rise of Mao Zedong and Chinese Civil War classroom stations activity, students examine the fall of the Qing Dynasty through the Rise of Mao Zedong. Students analyze a variety of stations to learn the events that took place before, during, and after the Chinese Civil War.

In Station 1, students learn about the events that led to the Chinese Civil War, such as the Opium Wars in China, the Treaty of Nanking, the Sino-Japanese Wars, and the rise of Sun Yat-sen and the Kuomingtang Nationalist Party. In Station 2, students focus on major events that occurred during the Chinese Civil War, such as the rise of Chiang Kai-shek, the 1911 Revolution, the Chinese Communist Party, the May Fourth Movement, the Shanghai Massacre, the rise of Mao Zedong, and the oppressive Long March endured by Zedong and his followers. In the final station in this activity, students engage with events that took place after the Chinese Civil War, such as the alliance between Mao Zedong and Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union, the oppressive land reform policies instituted by Mao, the Five-Year Plan, the Great Leap Forward, and the horrific Cultural Revolution that unleashed terror throughout China.

Students answer overarching analytical questions for each station to understand how a variety of events led to the rise of Mao Zedong, then complete a higher-level assignment where students focus on FOUR major events that had the greatest impact on Mao's rise to popularity in China.
