Description

A multiday lesson that teaches SEL lesson on acceptance and have students create their own Dr. Suess-like story!

In the end students will both understand how there is more to Dr. Seuss' stories that meet the eye. They will then write their own Seuss-like story about accepting yourself and others. A really engaging way to practice creative writing, SEL and right in time for the National Read Across America Week.

Day 1:

  • Students read to find out how Dr. Seuss wrote about themes like acceptance and kindness
  • Students read the Sneetches (read aloud link provided)
  • Students discuss SEL topics with guided questions
  • Students receive their writing prompt and review the rubric to understand expectations

Day 2:

  • Students read an exemplar to further understand expectations
  • Students complete pre-writing brainstorming graphic organizer
  • Students write their story

Day 3:

  • Students finish stories and share their stories
  • Time permitting, students can draw illustrations of their story
  • Students complete self-evaluation

Please Note:

  • This lesson is highly adaptable! You don't have 3 days? Modify it to 1 or 2.
  • Can be assigned digitally and completely independently (Great for Subs!)
  • You can choose for some parts of lesson to be whole group for rich discussion
  • Uses Google Apps (slides & forms)
