What educators are saying

My students loved this! I was able to have each homeroom not have any doubles and they were able to choose the story they wanted. This was great!
My students thoroughly enjoyed this resource. The variety of the prompt options gave each student the opportunity to choose something that interested them.

Description

Spooky stories narrative prompts with photos and word banks for reluctant writers and writers of all abilities in 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th Grade (Upper Elementary and Middle School). Ideal to inspire horror or mystery stories with eerie setting descriptions for Halloween this October or throughout the year (as there is no direct mention of Halloween). There are 20 NO PREP (or laminate to reuse) full-page creative writing story starter cards in PDF format, or you can assign them in Google Classroom or another LMS, using Easel. These imaginative writing tools feature a high-quality visual stimulus, word bank, first sentence or part sentence, sentence starters, and prompt questions to get ideas flowing. Ideal for the whole class as regular warm up activities, morning work, quick writes, early finisher challenges, homework tasks, main writing lessons, sub lessons, some special education (SPED) contexts, and dyslexia intervention. Please check the preview file to assess suitability for your students.

You might also like a set of general Creative Writing Story Prompts or this Creative Writing Story Prompts BUNDLE.

  • This set of scary story prompts does not include any direct reference to Halloween, so can be used to inspire horror or spooky stories at any point during the year.
  • Use them to inspire a whole story, or maybe just a few creative sentences without worrying about completing a story
  • The cards feature a dyslexia-friendly font and clear layout
  • Laminate to use again and again
  • Originally designed with Upper Elementary and Middle School students in mind, but might suit others
  • All 20 prompts are included with and without background color. The version with the background color can reduce glare for dyslexic students. However, if you would prefer an eco-printing option, use the version without the background color. If you have dyslexia-friendly colored paper, you could print the non-background version on this instead.
  • US spelling is used but additional UK spelling versions are included at the end of the file with a small number of amendments (these also use "full stop" in the checking box instead of "period" that is used in the US version)
  • The checking box at the bottom of each card reminds students to read their work and check for periods, capital letters, and common spellings
  • You know your students best. If your students are easily spooked, these might not be the right resource for them. Similarly, they are likely to be too scary for younger students. However, the prompts do vary in scariness so that, in most classes at the targeted age, students who prefer something a little less scary should find a prompt to suit them.
  • Teacher notes and a guide to the prompts are included at the start of the file
