What educators are saying

My students enjoyed this activity. We created this little poster after reading about 911 and used it to discuss the heroes in our school community. They proudly displayed these outside of the classroom for all to see.
This was a great way to introduce the students to 9/11 while focusing on what is important and not scaring the students.

Description

If you’re looking for an age-appropriate and engaging way to discuss the 9/11 events with your students, you’ll love these reading lesson activities! September 11th, Patriot Day, Patriot's Day, Patriots' Day or 9/11 should be remembered by all of us and it's my opinion that we must continue explaining the events of this day to our students to help them understand the bravery that was shown, and how America showed its true colors in the time after 9/11. Use this engaging resource to help teach students about September 11th with two different reading activities.

⭐September 11 - Patriot Day & Hero Craftivity - 9/11 Reading Lesson Activity Includes:

  • 2 Reading Activities with Supporting Materials (questions & craftivity)
  • Digital Version - Easily assign this to students in Google Slides via Google Classroom.

Activity #1 - Song Lyrics Lesson

  • This packet includes an article about the events of September 11th, the song lyrics to "Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning?" and 8 close-read questions to go along with the song to get kids thinking deeply about the text.
  • This product is probably best suited for grades 3 and higher. I teach fourth grade, and I am using this in conjunction with the music video, which is available on YouTube, the BrainPop video, as well as a few picture books.
  • PLEASE be aware, that last year I used this with 3rd graders, and it was a little rough on some of the kids. The subject material is obviously challenging to talk about with very young kids. If you have a mature third grade class, this lesson could work out. You know your class best and know if they can handle the material.

Activity #2 - Article Reading Activity

  • There is a simpler article for students to read, with an emphasis on heroes, especially those who helped after September 11th, 2001.
  • Students then create a hero craftivity, where they describe why each community helper is a hero.
  • This still focuses on 9/11, but is lighter than the first activity. There is both a color and a black and white version included, depending on whether you want your students to color this craftivity.

I hope this helps you out with teaching a tough, but necessary subject.

⭐ Thank you! My students really enjoyed working through this activity! And, it focused on what needed to be focused on for young learners.

⭐This is the perfect activity to do to honor our heroes of September 11th. We always read Fireboat and discuss what a hero is in our eyes. The students then complete this activity and we hang it up for a class display.

⭐This was a great resource to springboard into a discussion about 9/11. I used it in conjunction with our regular homeschool curriculum with our 4th grader and I loved the vocabulary focus as well as the chance for him to answer some open-ended questions about that day and what it means to us as a country. I would highly recommend.
