What educators are saying

My students really enjoy CSI-style activities. This was a great way to explain Social Darwinism and keep students engaged in the learning process.
This was a great primary source analysis activity. My students got really involved and invested in the topic.

Description

Social Darwinism CSI Investigation: What is Social Darwinism? Imperialism CSI!

This imperialism resource is also included in my World History imperialism bundle, located here! Buy the bundle and save a bundle!

In this highly-engaging, primary-source based Crime Scene Investigation centered on Social Darwinism, students learn about the theory of natural selection and evolution by Charles Darwin and then how it was twisted to apply to modern societies by Herbert Spencer with his description of the "survival of the fittest." In this CSI, students learn about the ideology that fueled European and United States imperialism at the end of the 19th-century that allowed the world to carve of Africa at the Berlin Conference, subjugate millions of people, and force Anglo-Saxon culture and beliefs across the globe. Students learn from a variety of speeches, letters, and excerpts from W.E.B DuBois (American Sociologist and Civil Rights Activist), Lester Ward (First President of the American Sociological Association), William Graham Sumner (Yale University), Jules Ferry (Prime Minister of France), and George Washington Williams as he writes King Leopold of Belgium on the atrocities he witnessed.

A source guide is included with questions to guide student learning, as well as a final prompt, teacher instructions, and an answer key.

Also, a Google 1:1 version is included that is designed for distance learning!
