This Stock Market Bundle includes five lessons about the Stock Market, which takes about 2-3 weeks to teach, or 7-9 45 minute periods.
Begin with the Pie Game, a great way to introduce stock market principles and vocabulary without the students even realizing it. I do this as an opening assignment on the first day of my business and marketing class--it gets the kids excited and sets the precedent that this class is going to be awesome. The pie game takes a full 45 minute class period, and sometimes you might need part of the second day to finish it. Students pick up paper pieces of pie and buy and trade them with each other--but watch out, the prices are always changing! Read more detail about this assignment in the Pie Game link. Students will need computer access for this assignment--either Excel or Google Sheets.
Next, the Simple Stock Simulation. This 1 day activity is great for narrowing in on that vocabulary you touched on the the Pie Game. Students study out eight fictional companies, and choose how many stocks to buy in some or all of the eight companies, with $3,000 to spend. Then, each month different things happen that cause the stock price to rise or lower. It's a great way to teach what causes prices to change in the stock market, and it totally editable--you can add or change events as needed. Students will need Excel or Sheets, and the teacher runs a PowerPoint that can also work in Google Slides.
Lesson 3 is the "meat" of this unit. After two fun activities to get students excited, they now will take their notes as you go through all the vocab and information they need to know. The notes are actually in Google Sheets, so they can easily to the math sections when calculating dividend yield and the change in stock prices. This lesson takes about three 45 minute periods, and also includes a full video of the lecture so absent or online students can do this completely on their own as needed.
InLesson 4, students apply their knowledge in a simulation where they track their own stocks on Investopedia. This lesson provides directions on how to set up their own Investopedia account where they can simulate buying stocks, and keep track of it each week.
Next, students do a Review Assignment in either Excel or Google, where to go over the math required. The assignment is self-grading, so the answer changes color when it's correct, and there is a printable score sheet. I have also included a separate Dividend Yield assignment that further helps them calculate dividend yield.
Last is the exam--a 22 question multiple choice test with a key included.
