What educators are saying

My class loved this activity! The completed product was very impressive in our classroom, we left it up for weeks to follow. It continued to be a conversation piece and sparked rich discussions about civil rights during black history month.

Description

Thurgood Marshall Collaboration Portrait Poster. My collaboration posters are designed to complement or supplement any Thurgood Marshall, Black History Month, or USA Justice studies or units.

This poster is the perfect anticipatory set to pique your students’ interest or a great extension to finish your studies with a WOW.

Your students will be talking about this poster for weeks to come and will always remember exactly which piece was “theirs” when they see it on display!

Recommended for any grade as there are 2 poster options available - coloring (for lower grades) and drawing (for older students). Plus, there are a variety of bonus resources included in this product.

It is recommended for both classroom teachers and art teachers.

Resource Details:

Option #1: Thurgood Marshall Coloring Collaboration Poster: Coloring

** GREAT FOR ANY AGE **

This lesson is very easy. Each student is given one section of a large mosaic poster to color according to the instructions on each sheet. Once all sheets are colored and cut out, they are then assembled to reveal a large mosaic/poster/mural of Marshall. You will need crayons, colored pencils, or markers in shades of blue.

Poster Details

  • There are 30 pieces.
  • Each piece fits on a regular 8.5" x 11" piece of paper.
  • The final poster is approx. 35" x 42" depending on your printer settings.
  • You will need markers, crayons, or colored pencils in shades of blue.

Option #2: Thurgood Marshall Drawing Collaboration Poster: Drawing

** Ideal for middle school and high school students and great for Art Teachers**

This lesson is not hard but is more challenging than the coloring version in lesson #1. In this lesson, each student will draw their own grid piece using a small version of their assigned gridcell as a reference. Once the pieces are drawn and cut out, the classroom poster can be assembled. This lesson engenders a lot of cooperation among students to get all of the drawings within the individual gridcells to line up well and produce a nice looking final poster of Thurgood Marshall. This is all about working together!

BONUS Activities:

Group collaboration posters are a lot of fun and leave a lasting impression. However, students don’t get to walk away with anything tangible to show their families. I have created a variety of handouts that individual students can work on when they are finished with their poster piece.

The handouts are for a variety of levels, so you can find one that fits your grade level. Included are:

  • Unscramble the portrait drawing
  • Unscramble the portrait cut and paste (with two grid variations)
  • Thurgood Marshall coloring page.

Also, I have a large collection of other Collaborative Group Portrait Posters, including many that are appropriate for Black History Month studies, including:

Teachers love to color, and that's why I made some coloring pages just for teachers...they are FREE and can be found by clicking here.

You don't have to be an art teacher to infuse art into your classroom - you just need to know one (and that someone is me!). Thank you for supporting my work and infusing your classroom with art!
