Transformations - Geometry Transformations Rotations Notes and Assignment

This is a set of notes meant to teach the concept of the transformations created by rotations.

Included in this product your will find:

A set of teacher notes that covers:
****** what is a rotation

****** what are the properties of a rotation

****** how to complete rotations in the coordinate plane (both ways - - given the coordinates and the rotations - - complete the rotation and given a figure how was it rotated?). This includes labeled diagrams and examples that with a complete answer key

****** What is rotational symmetry? How do you calculate the order and magnitude? - - I have included two ways to do this. First a short section of notes and diagrams if you want simply explain it. Secondly I have included a short exploration if time allows and you want the students to be able to "see" rotational symmetry and how the order is illustrated.

A set of student notes that match the teacher notes so that your students may follow along and annotate as you teach.

A homework assignment that has the students:
*** working through rotating sets of points under various translations in the coordinate plane
*** graphing figures and their images in the coordinate plane under various rotations,
*** examine figures to determine if they have rotational symmetry and if so to calculate the order and the magnitude.

The homework assignment includes an answer key.

Represent transformations in the plane using, e.g., transparencies and geometry software; describe transformations as functions that take points in the plane as inputs and give other points as outputs. Compare transformations that preserve distance and angle to those that do not (e.g., translation versus horizontal stretch).
Given a rectangle, parallelogram, trapezoid, or regular polygon, describe the rotations and reflections that carry it onto itself.
Develop definitions of rotations, reflections, and translations in terms of angles, circles, perpendicular lines, parallel lines, and line segments.
Given a geometric figure and a rotation, reflection, or translation, draw the transformed figure using, e.g., graph paper, tracing paper, or geometry software. Specify a sequence of transformations that will carry a given figure onto another.
Use geometric descriptions of rigid motions to transform figures and to predict the effect of a given rigid motion on a given figure; given two figures, use the definition of congruence in terms of rigid motions to decide if they are congruent.
