Description

In this highly-engaging Vietnam War stations resource, students investigate 13 different primary sources to understand the escalation of the Vietnam War from Dien Bien Phu in 1954 until the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964.

This lesson on the Vietnam War is included in two bundles to save you money -- my Vietnam War Resource Bundle andmy Cold War Bundle!

Students use an included 4-page student guide that navigates them through 13 different sources on the escalation of American involvement in Vietnam (letters, speeches, primary source images, etc.) and, in the end, students answer three overarching questions regarding the escalation of American involvement in Vietnam, beginning from the French involvement and the 1954 fall of Dien Bien Phu and the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident.

A "helpful terminology" guide is also included to provide students with information on keywords, such as Viet Cong, Viet Minh, Ho Chi Minh, Indochina, Dien Bien Phu, Gulf of Tonkin, Saigon, Hanoi, the United Nations, and Ngo Dinh Diem. A map is also included to introduce key locations.

In the end, students answer 3 overarching questions regarding their study of the Vietnam War and the Cold War. Students will answer:

1.) What caused the United States to enter Vietnam in 1954?

2.) What steps did President Kennedy take to maintain control over South Vietnam and North Vietnam?

3.) How (and why) did President Johnson escalate the war in Vietnam further?

A full key is included!
