What educators are saying

This product provides an easy way to increase students' vocabulary. This is definitely a permanent addition to my classroom along with this seller's reading quotes.
This was an easy to follow presentation that allowed me to start each class with a new word to discover as a class. Students felt comfortable with the routine and information and also had confidence to try tasks that extended their vocabulary.

Description

Want a no-prep vocabulary program that is student AND teacher friendly?

This “Word of the Week” program is an easy-to-implement, EDITABLE routine that you can use for mini-lessons or bell-ringers all year long. The clear, modern design and student-friendly materials make it easy for students to learn, practice, and apply new words in their writing. (It also teaches a majority of the CCSS “Vocabulary Acquisition and Use” standards FOR you!)

(Check the PREVIEW to see the list of 40 words that are taught!)

Though I made this for my seventh and eighth graders, I purposely chose SAT/ACT level vocabulary words that will make this system applicable for high school as well. Many words commonly appear in the news and in the context of tests or argument.

For EACH word, students learn:

• Definition & part of speech

• Synonyms, antonyms, and variations

• Etymology and/or Greek & Latin Roots

• Real-world example sentences from published sources

• Discussion question (optional)

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: This 103-page download includes…

1. PRE-TEST: Check initial understanding of the 40 words

2. BELL-RINGER/DISPLAY: Use the PowerPoint visual display while students record information into their guided notes journal

3. GUIDED NOTES: Fill-in-the-blank graphic organizer customized for each word

4. FLASHCARDS: Premade Quizlet sets (for each 10-word set AND overall)

5. QUIZZES: Students take a quiz every 10 words

6. BULLETIN BOARD: Display the cumulative list of words learned this year

7. POST-TEST: Assess growth over time

8. SKILLS TEST: An optional assessment with 10 NEW words to practice the skills taught through the guided notes journal

9. CERTIFICATES: Celebrate student victory from the post-test results

10. Bonus: Journal cover for guided notes, student directions, growth chart, etc.

11. Bonus: BOTH the editable version AND the ready-to-print PDF are included!

GOOGLE VERSIONS now included (a mix of Docs, Forms, and Slides)!

NOTE: There is a SECOND program available if you want to use different words with different classes, grade levels, or years. (I am alternating and teaching one each year.)
