How I Use It In My Classroom:

I have used this with my 5th-8th grade students for years. We do it at the beginning of the year as a Get to Know You Activity. We talk about what makes a person who they are and how we have inside character traits and outside traits. We also use it as an opportunity to discuss our cultures and how they are the same and different. I have students complete the Personality Inventories to learn more about their "inside selves". We then use the Picasso Portrait Unit to complete the Color Code Key together as a class (in case there are any questions) and then brainstorm their inside and outside character traits to put onto their self-portrait. They use the provided directions (I put them into page protectors so I can reuse them) to create their self-portrait (we like to paint it, but instructions for painting and coloring are both included). After completing the art activity, I have them use the Inside/Outside Poetry Unit** to write a poem to go with their art. They then present it all together. They put the art as their Binder Cover, Cubby Cover, or as a wonderfully colorful art display with the poems. Throughout the year, I often put students into groups based on their personality types, and it is easy for me to see who falls into each category by just glancing at these.
