What educators are saying

My students loved this resource. Is very helpful. I used for my advance science class and the kids used it to study for the final exam.
Thank you! My students loved this. We did most of it together, then they worked with a partner on the final page to match their wave to the animals. They worked hard and learned a lot!

Description

This virtual PhET Wave on a String Lab provides students opportunity to experiment with the various components of waves and the relationships between their anatomy, motion, and energy. It's SO important to see waves in motion to understand them! This virtual lab is a great way to help students to visualize the motion of transverse waves and to give them the opportunity to manipulate waves in order to see the relationships between wavelength, frequency, and wave speed. The lab provides both a guided portion for which students will be given parameters and will be exploring various components of the wave in isolation. They will be guided to calculate the speed of a wave using two different methods. The lab also provides an experimental portion for which students will be attempting to mimic given wave shapes using the lab platform. Your students will have a blast playing with this simulated wave!

The student sheet is now included as a Google Slides digital resource. The link to Make a Copy of this is included on the Teacher Notes.

Use mathematical representations to describe a simple model for waves that includes how the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave. Emphasis is on describing waves with both qualitative and quantitative thinking. Assessment does not include electromagnetic waves and is limited to standard repeating waves.
