Description

In this engaging Manifest Destiny primary source analysis activity, student learning is guided by a student source paper, a notes sheet, and a PowerPoint presentation. Using all components together, students will be able to explain the American belief of Manifest Destiny (and the attitudes toward expansion).

In the introductory activity, students engage with a PowerPoint to look at synonyms for the two terms, then make predictions as to what "Manifest Destiny" may mean or refer to. In step two, students examine 6 different sources, including Walt Whitman's "Pioneers! O Pioneers!", John O'Sullivan excerpts on California and Texas, and among others, Lewis Henry Morgan's view on how Manifest Destiny is impacting native people. A final prompt is included for students to showcase their understanding of Manifest Destiny.

This resource includes a paper in-class version and a 1:1 Google compatible version to be used in conjunction with Google Classroom. Just follow the included instructions for how to access the Google version, then share the resource through Google or assign via Google Classroom. This will allow students to type directly into the document!
