Description
Simulation-style lessons are a great way to engage students in historical content. In this lesson groups of 4 negotiate an agreement based on the interests of the nation they represent. This is a no-prep lesson that is both engaging and rigorous. Your students will practice their verbal presentation skills and learn the content more deeply.
This resource is EDITABLE and includes links to Google slides and handouts
HERE'S HOW THE LESSON FLOWS:
- There's a slide deck with a Do Now question (chart analysis) and a brief lecture about the Yalta conference and anintroduction to Potsdam. The slides are in Google but can be downloaded as PowerPoint.
- In groups of 4 (Each will take a role of the "Big 3" and 1 moderator) students will address the main topics that had to be decided:
1. What to do with Germany (How to replace the Nazi government)
2. What would happen to Poland and the rest of eastern Europe
3. Should there be reparations (war fines) and if so what to do with the money?
4. Should the League of Nations be replaced with a new peacekeeping organization?
- After reading a short passage about their country's goals the negotiation begins.
- After each group has created their agreements they will compare it to the actual outcome of the conference/
- There's an exit ticket question as a conclusion.
A lesson plan is included.
