Description

INTEGRATE THE ARTS INTO ANY SUBJECT

Integrating music and the arts into the classroom can be hard, this allows you to easily integrate into any subject! This pack scaffolds students as they create new lyrics using subject vocabulary to a well-known song. This activity can be used with any concept, and works as an extremely effective mnemonic devise to trigger students memory. There are few things as powerful as music's ability to link to our memory. This is also a great activity because students are required to use level 4 depth of knowledge thinking in order to create their song.

Also included is a rating scale on which students rate their own creativity/ musical ability. This allows the teacher to separate students into groups with a confidence that at least one member of the group will have the background necessary to complete the task, and lead the group.

My students loved this activity, and I was pleasantly surprised by the results they produced after being supported with the how to. I have used this to review a science unit, but this could work with any subject. Especially subjects rich in vocabulary!

I begin the activity by having my students complete the self-assessment. I then quickly break the students into groups by looking at the overall-score the student assigned themselves. Next, I model the process. I show each of the three planning sheets available to the students and explain they can choose whichever sheet makes sense to them, I am even fine if they don't use one, so long as they have a song about the concept when time is up! I personally prefer the planning sheet that breaks each line down by it's syllables, but I have students that prefer the vocabulary brainstorm page.

The best part of this lesson is when the students perform for one another. I have the students sing their song twice, once as a group and a second time the class will join in.

This is a great website with audio recordings of songs, both with the original lyrics and without! CLICK HERE
