Excellent opportunity for students to use magnets in a quick and easy experiment. Mark a pencil at every centimeter.  Slide ring magnets onto pencil one at a time.  Place the poles so that every magnet repels the one above and below it.  Measure the distance along the pencil as each magnet is added.
